[THOMAS DIGGES]: 'A Brieffe discourse against Succession knowen . . . ', a tract addressed to Elizabeth I proposing a means of protecting her by the recruitment (f. 20b) of an army of 40,000 and of ensuring her own choice of successor; c. 1585. Copy, early 17th cent. The author refers (ff. 21 sqq.) to the attempt by John Somerville on the Queen's life (Dec. 1583) and to the murder of the Prince of Orange (10 July 1584). Another copy, dated Jan. 1585, is preserved in the PRO (SP12/176/32; SPD 1581-1590, p. 255). Proposals for raising and training 40,000 troops in Lansdowne MS. 119, ff. 123-132b (endorsed 'Mr Digges' by Burghley, f. 132b) may be the 'particuler brief discourse' promised by the author of the present MS. (f. 21).
