POLITICAL TRACTS, etc., particularly concerning ecclesiastical conduct and government; 16th-17th centt. French and Italian.
1. ff. 24-45. 'Avvertimenti politici utilissimi per la Corte del Sigre Conte Verua'. Beg. 'Nell' eligere un Padrone credi'. Ends 'a' ministri della Santa Chiesa'. Also in Royal MS. 14 A.XVIII, f. 196 and Paris B.N. MS. Ital.suppl.725 (see Marsand, i, p. 608). The counts of Verua were a Piedmontese family, but the identity of the present writer has not been established. A reference (f. 33) to the Society of Jesus suggests the early 17th cent. as the date of composition.
2. ff. 47-74b. 'Instruttione del modo, che si deve tenere nell' introdursi nella Corte di Roma'. Beg. 'Mentre V.S. mi ricerca Instruttione del modo che il Sigr N. suo deve tenere nell' introdursi nella Corte di Roma'. Ends 'e con stile familiare e condecente tra noi'. On the last page the author refers to the 'Cortegiano' of Baldassare Castiglione, the 'Idea del Prelato' (see below, art. 12) and the 'discorso del Card' Commendone', the 'Discorso sopra la corte di Roma' by Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Commendone. The 'Instruttione' seems to be written after the reign of Pope Sixtus V (d.1590), see f. 70b, and at a time when the Duke of Urbino was Prefect of Rome, the Duke of Parma Gonfaloniere of Holy Church, the Prince Savelli Marshal of the Conclave, Duke Conti Coppiero Pontificio and Duke Cesarini Gonfaloniere of the Roman People.
3. ff. 75-89, 100-102 (ff. 90-99 lacking due to error in the original foliation). 'Instruttione sopra le qualita di un Card'. Papabile e come si deve portare'. Beg. 'Cardinale Papabile prima deve acquistar l'aura'. Ends 'deve astenersi da simili cose'. The author introduces examples from and references to the elections of Popes Marcellus II (1555), Paul IV (1555), Pius IV (1559), Gregory XIII (1572), Sixtus V (1585), Clement VIII (1592) and Paul V (1605).
4. ff. 103-144b. 'Discorso notabilissimo di ms. Gio Francesco Lottino sopra l'attioni del Conclave'. Beg. 'Io posso testificare come di cosa veduta'. Ends 'in quel modo che piace a lui'. See also Add. MSS. 48072, art. 1, where the item is more fully described and 48074, art. 1.
5. ff. 145-221. 'Instruttione Politica sopra li Conclavi'. Beg. 'Conclave, cioè cum clave, è voce latina'. Ends 'et hora di quell' affetto, et interesse'. Also in: Royal MS. 14 A.XVIII, f. 21 and Add. 8412, f. 1; Paris B.N. MS. Ital.10043 (see Marsand, i, pp. 288, 289); Vat. MS. Vat.Lat.10714, I, f. i, where it is attributed to Cardinal Lanfranco Margotti (created 1608). The last conclave referred to in it is that of Pope Leo XI in 1605 (see J. B. Borino, Codices Vaticani Latini, 10701-10875, Rome, 1947, p. 3218).
6. ff. 222-245b. 'Teorica del Conclave'. Beg. 'Il Conclave è un adunanza di Cardinali'. Ends 'che nell' uno, et nell' altro modo fa i Papi'. Apparently also in Paris B.N. MS. Ital.283 (see Marsand, ii, p. 82) and Vat. MSS. Vat.Lat.10714, I, f. 33 and Urb.Lat.843, f. 437.
7. ff. 248-297. 'Il Conclavista di Ms. Felice Gualtiero A Ms. Cipriano Saracinello'. Beg. 'Se gl' huomini fussero sempre più riservati'. Ends 'di allontarla più che può da stesso'. See J. B. Saegmüller, Die Papstwahlen und die Staaten von 1447 bis 1555, Tübingen, 1890, p. 57 and Müller, pp. 275-288, where a summary of the treatise is given. Other manuscripts of the work besides those mentioned by Saegmüller are: Add. 6901, ff. 1-12; Vat. MSS. Vat.Lat.10849, f. 3, 10868, I, ff. 37b, 103, and Urb.Lat.845, f. 148. Gualterio's 'Conclavista' is a reply to that of G. F. Lottini (see Add. 48072, art. 1) and both tracts are dated 1566-1569 by Saegmüller, p. 278. Saracinello was secretary to Sebastiano Gualterio, Bishop of Viterbo 1551-1566. For a reply to both Lottini and Gualterio see Add. 48072, art. 3.
8. ff. 298-301b. 'Ricordi di Pauolo 3o al Cardinal Farnese su Nepote'. Beg. 'Voi ci havete detto che li Cardinali'. Ends 'se non dalle discordie et male opere'. The nephew addressed is Alessandro Farnese, who was created cardinal on 18 Dec. 1534. The 'Ricordi' includes remarks on Cardinals Ercole Gonzaga, Giovanni Salviati, Niccolò Gaddi and Niccolò Ridolfi (ff. 300, 300b). Several surviving MSS. are recorded. Published by L. Frati, Archivio Storico Italiano, ser. 5, xxxv, 1905, pp. 448-450.
9. ff. 302-338. 'Ragionamento à Mons. Illmo. Cardinale San Sisto'. Beg. 'Vedendo io Illmo Mons. che in questa gran fortuna'. Ends 'come di tutto cuore prego che sia; Et riverente vi bacio la mano', followed by the title 'Discorso del s.r Fabio Albergati al Cardinale San Sisto del modo col quale si possa governare, et conservarsi intiera la riputatione come Cardinale et Nipote di Papa'. Addressed to Filippo Boncompagni (d. 7 June 1586), by Fabio Albergati (1538-1606), on whom see DBI, I, pp. 617-619. Boncompagni was created a cardinal on 2 June 1572 by his uncle, Gregory XIII. Many other manuscripts of the work are known. Printed in C. Ventura, Thesoro Politico (pp. 237-254 in the Cologne edition of 1598).
10. ff. 347-356. 'Ricordi dati dal. sig.r N. al sig.r Card.le Borghese, circa il modo che deve governarsi con ogni sorte di Persone'. Beg. 'Fra li piu difficili, et pericolosi stati'. Ends 'per debolezza humana non se ne cadano'. Also in: Royal MS. A.XVIII, f. 1; Paris B.N. MSS. Ital.102113.3., item viii and 104164.4., item iv (Marsand, i, pp. 450, 474); Vat. MS. Urb.Lat.1691, f. 19 (imperfect).

Printed. Florence. Zanobi Pignoni. 1616. On Balduino de Monte Simoncelli see G. Cinelli Calvoli, Biblioteca Volante, iii, Venice, 1746, pp. 362, 363 and his life in J. N.
