'Primieramente mostrarsi verso i Principi et Popoli'. Ends 'che si desidera per ottenere quel che domandiamo'. The present tract may be compared with that entitled 'Instruzione Politica per Negoziare con Principi, conoscere la Natura loro, acquistar la grazia di essi, Mandare à buon fine i Negozij, e la perfezione di sè stesso', beg. 'Se vogliamo diligentemente considerare', which is in Egerton MS. 1096, f. 74 and Paris B.N. MSS. Ital.10062, item i, and 8127 (see Marsand, i, p. 329, ii, p. 35).

2. ff. 25-77b. Pope Urban VIII (elected 6 Aug. 1623). Beg. 'Natural desiderio di tutti l'huomini'. Ends 'con l'aiuto della sua divina inspiratione'. Also in Royal MS. 14 A.XVIII, f. 125 and Royal Appendix 83, f. 21 (imperfect). The version in Vat. MS. Urb.Lat.1661, f. 382, is attributed to Cardinal Antonio Caetani, who died 17 March 1624. Another account of the election is in Add. 48075, art. 11 (q.v.).
3. ff. 79-116b. Pope Gregory XV (elected 9 Feb. 1621). Beg. 'L'improvisa, ma per la longhezza del Principato'. Ends 'et alla Christiana Republica'. Note on f. 79 attributing the account to Cardinal Roberto Ubaldini. It corresponds with the account beg. 'Quasi nel primo giorno del male di Paolo V', which is in Add. 48075, art. 10 (q.v.).
4. ff. 117-205. Pope Julius II (elected 1 Nov. 1503). Beg. 'Die Martis xvii Octobris Papa in mane fuit communicatus'. From the diary of Johannes Burchard, concluding at 'alii redierunt ad loca sua'. Followed by a note on Burchard's death. See the printed edition of the diary in Muratori, Città di Castello edn., xxxii, pt.i, 1913, pp. 393-512. For another copy see Add. 48073, art. 10.
5. ff. 207-225b. Pope Urban VII (elected 15 Sept. 1590). Beg. 'Papa Sisto Vto di felice memoria doppo esser stato'. Ends 'et ne fu fatto gran festa'. Corresponds closely with the account in Add. 48075, art. 3, where the item is further described. The present account is also in Add. MSS. 8418, f. 210 and 28464, f. 97.
6. ff. 229-242b. Pope Marcellus II (elected 9 April 1555). Beg. 'Il Cardinale di Ferrara da primo che tornò di Francia'. Ends 'secondo l'usanza con lo scrutinio de voti aperti', followed by a list of Cardinals at the time. Also in Add. MSS. 48072, art. 2(b) and 48074, art. 11. The account has been attributed to Giovanni Francesco Lottini.

The visitation was opposed by the Spanish ambassador, Iñigo Vélez de Guevera y Tasis, Conde de Oñate, and a copy of his protest is on ff. 334-337. See further Pastor, xxviii, pp. 220, 221.

11. ff. 346-346(b). Oratione over Parlamento del Dvca di Hernia, nel Conseglio di Spagna. Italian. Printed. Beg. 'Io vorrei ne presenti motiui di Sauoia'. Apparently a translation of a speech by the Spanish chief minister, Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas, Duque de Lerma, c. 1610-1615, in favour of war against Duke Charles Emmanuel of Savoy.
12. ff. 347-351. 'Lettre de la Vigueur a son Camarade La Ruyne'. French. Beg. 'Tu trouveras possible'. Ends 'Vostre très humble serviteur et camarade de Lopineau de la Vigueur.' This 'letter' is a squib or jeu d'esprit purporting to give news of the court of Louis XIII, which can be dated to the period of the ministry of Cardinal Richelieu (1624-1642). It is concerned with diplomacy and appointments to office, as well as scandal along the lines of 'le Cardinal de la Vallette explique le droit canon à Madame la Princesse' [de Condé] (f. 349b).
