COLLECTION RELATING TO MILITARY MATTERS, particularly defence and the musters, taken from public records; 1460-1610. Some Latin and English translations. Copies, c. 1613. For this subject see
L. Boynton, The Elizabethan Militia 1558-1638, 1971. Most of the material is temp. Elizabeth I, and the latest dated items are for 28 May 1610 (f. 85). Apparently collected as a precedent book by Clement Edmonds al. Edmondes, Clerk to the Council (knt. 1617) who became Muster-master-general in 1613. Edmondes' name occurs, f. iib, and a scheme for directing military affairs signed by him is at ff. 237b-238. The material includes commissions, instructions, correspondence and statistics, and subjects covered comprise the musters, coastal fortification, defence against invasion, victualling and supply and internal security. Included also are analyses of: (a) the cost of wars, tempp. Hen. VIII-Edw. VI. ff. 212-225; (b) expenses in Ireland and the Netherlands during the reign of Elizabeth I; 1587. ff. 225b-228.
Paper; ff. ii + 238. Contemporary foliation throughout. Folio. c. 1613. Two main secretary hands: (a) ff. 1-103; (b) ff. 103-231. Owned by Sir Clement Edmondes, see above. The name 'Charles', is written f. i. Vellum binding. Spine '179'.
