ESTATE MAPS of lands at Brandon and Bretford, in Wolston, co. Warw.; mid 17th cent. Adjoining lands owned by Lord Craven are mentioned on the plans, dating the item to after the creation of William Craven as Baron Craven, 12 March 1627. Brandon manor and Bretford were acquired from Sir Percy Willoughby by Sir Henry Yelverton in 1615 (VCH Warwickshire, vi, 1951, pp. 276, 277). They are the only estate maps in the Yelverton library; most of the volume, an expensive vellum ledger, is blank. The first map, ff. 5b-6, shows the whole area, with fields, roads and the two hamlets of Brandon and Bretford; Wolston village is also added, south of the Avon. Scale, approx. 4 in. to the mile, south at the top. The following five maps show the same lands approx. 16 in. to the mile, with additional detail. Acreages of fields are not given, but owners of lands not part of the estate are named. Some details in the maps, notably the representations of houses and the filets of the decorative border, ff. 5b-6, closely resemble features of plans of lands in Kent, 1630-1642, Add. MS. 34155, ff. 1-24, made for Sir Roger Twysden, 2nd Bart., brother-in-law of Sir Christopher Yelverton.
Vellum; ff. i + 76. Folio. Mid XVII cent. The maps are on double sheets, folded and mounted on vellum guards between blanks; the unused part of the MS. (ff. 22b-76) is similarly constructed. A numeration and some words on the larger scale maps have been partly or wholly lost through cropping. One hand throughout, save for the addition of two field names, Hill Close and Bretford pasture, ff. 5b, 8b. The first map, ff. 5b-6, has a decorative penwork border of scallop-edged leaves within double filets. 17th-cent. vellum binding with some gilt line and the remains of green silk ties. Numbered '201' on spine. Fragment of label on spine, f. i.
