CATALOGUE OF YELVERTON MANUSCRIPTS; mid-late 17th cent. The catalogue (ff. 1-75b) is largely as printed in CMA, 1697, of which the Yelverton Library copy is Add. 48196 A. Possibly begun around or shortly before 1648. A quarto MS. catalogue of the 'Manuscripts belonging to Sir Chr. Yelverton Bart. Anno 1648' was lot 4254 in Richard Gough's sale, 4 April etc. 1810, at which it was bought by Richard Heber. Heber's sale-cat., 11 Feb. 1836, lot 231, noted that 'This Catalogue is printed in the Catalogus MSS. Angliae, Vol. II', but does not record whether all items in CMA were in the quarto catalogue. The MS. was then bought by Thomas Thorpe; it was item 175 in his Catalogue . . . of Fourteen Hundred Manuscripts, 1836, and is now lost to sight. Two folio MS. catalogues of the Yelverton Library, both dated 1694, are Bodleian Library MS. Add.C.223 (Sum. Cat. 29433) and Brussels Bibl. Roy. MS. 14005. The present catalogue is begun (ff. 1-3) in the main hand of Add. 48087, which also supplies the index, and continues (ff. 3-66) in a second hand, which finishes at Yelverton 165. Nos. 166-187 are entered in a third hand: these volumes are all mid 17th cent., some as late as 1652 (Add. 48163). Included in this section after No. 169 is the description of Add. 48006, marked by the clerk 'Numb. 7' 'pars jma' and cross referred to f. 6, suggesting that the third writer was adding some items missed in the initial process of numbering and cataloguing. There is an index to? Mercator's atlas in hand three (ff. 84-86). The entry for No. 113 is blank, suggesting that the item was already missing when the catalogue was made. There is a catalogue of the Yelverton Appendix MSS. I-XVIII by Edward Maunde Thompson, compiled before publication of HMC 2nd Report in 1871, ff. 186-191. Missing MSS. (see the Introduction) are marked 'W(antin)g' in the margin of the catalogue in red ink, and there are 19th-cent. notes of missing MSS. at ff. ii and v. Inserted in the volume, ff. vi-vib, is a leaf of notes of books and a MS. lent from the Library, 1681-1685. Correspondence about the MSS. between Lord Calthorpe and Lord and Lady Sussex, 1795, is inserted at ff. vii-xiv. A catalogue of the Yelverton printed books, 1694, Hargrave MS. 107, includes an inserted leaf, f. 42, giving the shelf placings of Yelverton MSS. 1-187.
Paper; ff. xx + 354 + 70*. 17th-cent. foliation, 1-75. Folio. XVII-XIX centt. Fragments of a 14th-cent. antiphoner in the binding, ff. iv and xx. The name 'Mr Pool' is written on f. 354 in a 17th?-cent. hand. Binding, 17th-cent. brown calf, both covers bearing the stamp of Henry Yelverton, 1st Viscount de Longueville. Label, 'Appx. XVIII' on spine, f. 1.
