TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCIV. Louis Rondel: Notebook and letter-book kept while at Oxford; circa 1622-1624. Partly Latin, Greek and French. Partly drafts and fair copies. Imperfect, following excision and mutilation of leaves. Rondel, who was a contemporary of the younger Trumbull at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, is mentioned in letters (Add. 72441, ff. 10-13, above) of the elder Trumbull to his son late in 1624. Copies of letters (ff. 10, 10v) addressed to members of the Reformed Church at Vitré, etc., suggest that he was a Huguenot refugee. The surviving leaves (ff. 3-22), lettered at the head from A to GL, were originally intended to comprise a 'Table Alphabetique des choses contenues en La Sainte Bible'. They now contain drafts and copies of letters to various addressees in England and on the continent, including one to William Trumbull the younger (f. 16), on the death of his sister Elizabeth in 1624, and others to members of Rondel's own family (ff. 8, 8v). Also included are fair copies, with revisions, of Rondel's Oxford oration (f. 3) of 3 Nov. 1622 on the thesis 'Posse, Nolle, Nobile', and of some elegiacs, in Latin and Greek, 'In Reditum Caroli principis Walliae &c.' (f. 12) of circa Oct. 1623, not published in the Oxford congratulatory volume Carolus Redux (1623). The remaining leaves (ff. 23-27) were formerly found loose in the volume, and include some miscellaneous notes, etc., partly in Latin and Greek, on a bifolium (f. 23-24v) paginated 23/24 and 33/34 in ink, along with notes (ff. 26-27) on the Psalms by the younger Trumbull, jotted on a leaf docketed by his father as a letter of John Stone, 7 Feb. 1623/4, that is itself wanting from the series now in Add. 72311 above.
Paper: ff. xii+27. Covers of limp vellum with remains of four leather thongs. Imperfect contemporary foliation in ink (ff. 4-18) from 4-22. Formerly Add. 19/16.
