TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCV. Sir William Ingleby and others: Collection of medical recipes; n.d., circa early 17th cent.-circa 1638. Much of this collection, which was apparently formed initially by or for the use of Ingleby, consists of recipes from named sources, including 'The middle Doctor Fryar' and 'Mr Dr Tho: Frier the younger' (ff. 135, 135v). At a later period, while the manuscript was in the possession of Elizabeth Trumbull, née Weckherlin, first wife of the younger William Trumbull, several more (ff. 35, 38v, 69v, 70v, 144, 144v, 155) were added by members of the family, including one communicated by 'Doctor [Matthew] Lyster' (f. 82). The volume begins (ff. 1-21v) with an alphabetical index that incorporates the later additions.
Paper: ff. iv+167. 195 x 155mm. Limp vellum covers. Main watermark similar to Heawood no. 136 (dated 1611-1629). The front cover (f. i) carries the ownership-inscription, before 1638, 'Elizabeth Trumbull Medecines. l.1.' Sr Wm Ingelbie' [Kt. 1603], the word 'Medecines' being repeated on the back cover (f. iv) and the spine. Her name also appears on the front (f. iiv) and on the back flyleaf (f. iii) where it is written above the deleted inscription 'Nathaniell Creswell 1639'. For a paper of medical notes sent by Weckherlin for the use of Elizabeth, 10 May 1642, see above Add. 72442, f. 82. A recipe for sciatica sent by Conte Van Hoorn to the elder Trumbull, 15 January 1621/2, formerly found loose in this volume, has been transferred to Add. 72424 above. From D/ED F2 (E/Box 14): see stamp on front cover (f.i).
