TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXXXVII (ff. 138). Family and occasional verse; circa 1625-1726, n.d. Partly autograph drafts. Partly Latin and French. While several of these pieces date from the reign of Charles I, most belong to the period between the Restoration and the death of George I. They largely consist of political poems, prologues and epilogues, funeral elegies and ballads, etc. Also included are birthday-poems, etc., addressed to Sir William Trumbull and members of his family, with some verses and translations by him and in his hand. Two pieces are fair copies in the hand of Alexander Pope and Elijah Fenton. The arrangement is roughly chronological. From Add. 17, 18. As follows:
1. ff. 1-30. Family verse, including birthday-poems, etc., addressed to Sir William Trumbull, to his 2nd wife Judith (née Lee) and to his son William; circa 1660-1722, n.d.
2. ff. 31-60. Miscellaneous verses, partly on political subjects, copied in the hand of Sir William Trumbull, including some original compositions and translations by him; circa 1668-1716, n.d. Partly drafts. Partly Latin and French.
3. ff. 61-73. Poems by or copied in the hand of Alexander Pope, etc.; circa 1705-1716, n.d. Viz.: (a) William Wycherley: 'An Epistle to Mr. Dryden; Occasion'd by his desiring me to join with him in writing a Comedy . . .'; n.d., circa late 17th cent. Fair copy in Pope's hand, circa 1705-1716. ff. 61-64; and (b) Alexander Pope: translation 'Tir'd with vain Hopes, and with Complaints as vain'; n.d., circa 1704-1716. Autograph fair copy. Preceded on the same page by a text of the original epigram, in French, by Francois Maynard (1582-1646). f. 65. Both poems were printed in Poems on Several Occasions. By his Grace the Duke of Buckingham . . . And other eminent Hands, ed. by Pope and published by Lintot in July 1717, (b) with the subtitle 'In English for Sir W. Trumbull', whose own version (f. 66) is also preserved here. See Pope's Own Miscellany, ed. Norman Ault (1935), pp.xxxvi, xxxvii, and the Twickenham edition of Pope's Minor Poems (1964), pp. 168-169. 4. ff. 67-73. Elijah Fenton: two poems and a translation; 1725, n.d. These are: (a) 'The Ramble to Barnet. Feb: 24th 1724'. Autograph fair copy, in a single gathering. ff. 67-73; (b) Translation from Seneca, entitled 'The Stoic to the Courtier', beg. 'From wild careers thy roving hope reclaim'. Autograph draft. f. 73; and (c) an epigram 'On seeing a young Lady's picture', identified in a footnote as 'Mrs. Martha Blount's, a Roman Catholic; ye picture is at Mr. Pope's at Twickenham' and beg. 'Kneller! till Patty sat to thee'. Autograph fair copy. f. 73v.
5. ff. 74-136. Miscellaneous verses; circa 1600-1726, n.d. Partly Latin and Italian. Included are prologues and epilogues, etc., partly by Dryden (ff. 91-92v), poems by Herrick (f. 74), Waller (f. 94, and see f. 96), Dorset (f. 109), Prior (f. 113), Gay (f. 130) and others, together with some commemorative verses, ballads and songs. Many carry dockets in the hand of Sir William Trumbull. Also included (ff. 80, 81) are some verses, etc., relating to Sir William Davenant's Middle Temple masque The Triumphs of the Prince d'Amour of Feb. 1636.
