SIR WALTER RALEGH: Two documents relating to his second voyage to Guiana; 1617, 1618.
Paper: ff. ix+2. (1) 417 x 300 mm; and (2) 395 x 280 mm. Armorial wafer seals. From the Temple Newsham papers. Owned by the 3rd Viscount Halifax, later 1st Earl of Halifax, and sold at Sotheby's, 8 June 1936, lots 225, 226, when they were purchased by Messrs. Maggs (Catalogue 634, Autumn 1936, items 781, 782). Also included are a printed extract from The Daily Telegraph, 18 May 1936 (f. i); a typewritten copy of Maggs's description (ff. ii-v) of the Ferne document, in which the partial transcript of the document is concluded in pencil in the hand of Agnes Latham; printed extracts (ff. vi-viii) from Maggs's Catalogue 634, items [781], 782, and Catalogue 767, 1947, item 1180; and a typewritten receipt (f. ix) made out on 19 Jan. 1948 to Mrs Bryher.
As follows:
1. f. 1. Confirmation by Sir John Ferne, Captain of the Flying Hart, of shares in any profits received from the voyage, proportionate to the hundred pounds ventured respectively by Richard Calthorp, Thomas Wade and William Gilby, gentlemen of London, within thirty days of the return to London; 1 June 1617. Signed by 'John Fearne' and, as witnesses, by Wilfred Kettlewell and Thomas Hardwen.
2. f. 2. Assignment by Sir Arthur Ingram of his share in any profits of the Guiana voyage to Richard Calthorp of London, 'Esquire'; 28 April 1618. The document by which Ingram contributed £330 to the expedition was sold with the Temple Newsham papers, as below, lot 223. Signed by Ingram and, as witnesses, by Thomas Waad and Anthony Anketill, servant to Robert Bankworth, gentleman and scrivener.
