A contract whereby Aurelius Ioannes and his two sons, purple-dyers of Hermopolis, acknowledge to have received almost five gold solidi each in advance from Colluthus, a flax-worker of Hermopolis, on account of the work they will be doing for Colluthus at his workshop. The work consists of dying 225 bundles. They will provide the necessary tools. Should the work not be completed, they will have to pay the money back in addition to a fine. Another Ioannes has written on their behalf as they are illiterate. The subscription of Colluthus follows. The docket is on the back.

- Papyrus sheet, of lighter colour in the middle portion, with damage along the folding lines and broken off at the bottom. Writing runs along the fibres on both sides, the back having a two-line docket. On the front the upper and lower margins are lost. No margin was left to the sides. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Materials: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 265 x 111 mm; housed in a glass case measuring 350 x 200 mm.
Script: Fluent sloping cursive hand, often compressed at the end of the lines and with a tendency to become smaller towards the end of the text; lines tend to slope downwards slightly; the subscription in the last line displays more upright letters of bigger size; the hand on the verso is upright and cursive.

Provenance: Hermopolis (El-Ashmunein), Hermopolite nome, Egypt. Purchased with Egerton Papyri 33-34 from Maggs on 14 January 1939 using the Farnborough fund (£3,000 bequeathed in 1838 by Charles Long, 1st Baron Farnborough (b. 1760, d. 1838)).
