The bulk of the volume consists of assessments for, and orders relating to levy of subsidies, warrants from J.P.'s to High and petty Constables, etc., examinations of suspects, and other papers rel. to local administration within the county; also (ff. 38, 260-393 passim) rentals, accompts of wood-sales, etc., of the manors of Cottesmore and Barrow belonging to Sir Edward Heath, K.B., 1661. At the beginning are letters to Sheriffs, J.P.'s, etc., from Gregory [Cromwell, 1st Baron] Cromwell, F[rancis Hastings, 2nd Earl of] Huntingdon, and H[enry Hastings, 3rd Earl of] Huntingdon, the most interesting being four from the second-named, (a) announcing his capture of [Henry Grey,] Duke of Suffolk, and the flight of the Duke's brother, Thomas, 2 Feb. 1551. f. 11 :- (b) two letters urging the suppression of seditious rumours within the county, 5 Apr. 1554 and 29 May 1554. ff. 12, 14 ;- (c) expressing surprise at the suspicions cast on his commission as Lord Lieut., 24 June 1554. f. 15.
