LEEDS PAPERS. Vol. XXXIII (ff. 102). Tracts, etc., relating to foreign affairs; 1669-1670.
(1) 'Project of a Treaty of Commerce between England and France': evidently a copy of the draft treaty sent to the French by Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington, 9 Sept. 1669, extracts from which are printed in P. de Ségur- Dupeyron, Histoire des négociations commerciales et maritimes du règne de Louis XIV, 1863, pp. 246-252. ff. 1-21.
(2) Tracts by Sir Philip Meadows al. Meadowe al. Medows, the elder, Ambassador to Sweden, etc. Copies. Viz:-(a) 'A Brief Enquiry into Leagues and Alliances made betwixt Princes, and the Nature of their Obligation': a shorter version, with some changes in order, of 'A brief enquiry into Leagues and Confederacies made betwixt Princes and Nations ... , composed in the year 1673... by Sir P. Meddows, 1681', printed in A collection of scarce and valuable tracts [The Somers Tracts], 1748, iv, pp. 377-386. ff. 22-32 b;-(b) 'A Narrative of the most Remarkable actions, Civil and Military, during both the Late warrs betwixt Sueden and Denmarck, before and after the Roschild Treatie', showing some slight variations from the printed work A Narrative of the Principal Actions occuring in the Wars betwixt Sweden and Denmark ..., 1677. A differently worded dedication by Meadows to George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol (f. 12 b), dated 20 Oct. 1674, while that in the printed text is dated 24 Sept. 1675, suggests that the MS. is an earlier composition. Wanting on f. 43 is a passage on constitutional arrangements in Schleswig-Holstein which appears on pp. 69-70 of the printed version. ff . 33 b-54 b;-(c) 'Some Additions made to a little Treaty of Sir Philip Medows, entituled A view of the Swedish & other affaires as they now stand in Germany this present yeare 1675 with relation to England': a commentary (with corrections) on the last paragraph (pp. 147-152) of the text of the preceding article, and on the tract 'A View of the Suedish and other affairs, as they now stand in Germany this present year, 1675, with relation to England', which follows it (pp. 153-176) in the printed edition; aft. 1677. ff. 56-67 b.
(2) 'Tractatus de Commerciis et Navigatione, cum Serenissimo et Potentissimo Sueciae & & & Rege Delineatio': evidently a draft of the Treaty of Commerce and Navigation between Sweden and the United Provinces, 12 Oct. 1679, printed in J. Dumont, Corps universel diplomatique, tom. vii, part i, 1731, pp. 437-442, and elsewhere. Latin. The draft was perhaps originally an enclosure in the letter from Josef August du Cros now in Eg. MS. 3354, f. 166. ff. 68-86 b.
(3) 'Estat du Commerce de la mer Baltique', a tract describing chiefly the dominant position held by Sweden, evidently compiled (see f. 91) during the period when Sir Edward Wood was Ambassador to that country; [1672-1679]. French. ff. 87-102.
