LEEDS PAPERS. Vol. LII (ff. 17). The Statutes of the Order of the Garter: presumably the copy written for the 1st Duke of Leeds on his installation as a knight on 19 Apr. 1677. The Statutes are in the form ordained by Henry VIII, as printed by E. Ashmole, The History of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, 1715, Appendix, pp. 545-565, preceded (f. l b) by the names of the first founders in 1348 and followed (ff. 15-17b) by the oath, admonitions and some additional enactments of Philip and Mary and of Elizabeth I. The same text appears in King's MS. 397, Harley MS. 1356, Add. MSS. 6291, 6294, 6330, ff. 1-16b, 6337, ff. 8-45, and, with a variant and apparently later version of the oath and admonitions, which inter alia omits references to the Virgin Mary, in Harley MSS. 3451, 4607 and Add. MS. 6290 (see Ashmole, op. cit., pp. 339-341, for some of the variations). Original binding by Samuel Mearn of dark blue leather, gilt-tooled, with the crowned cipher of Charles II at the corners, and with pale blue ties (see H. M. Nixon, English Restoration Bookbindings, 1974, p. 22).
