LEEDS PAPERS. Vol. LVI (ff. i+97). 'Mémoires de la retraite du [Bernard de Nogaret de la Valette et de Foix, Duc de la Valette and (1642)] Duc d'Espernon en Angleterre et ce qui est arivé en suite', written in French by Sir William Godolphin (b. 1605, d. 1663) of Spargor, co. Cornw., father of Sir William Godolphin, diplomatist (see a note, circ. 1742, on f. 1). An account is given of the Duke's accidental arrival in England fleeing to the Netherlands to escape royal displeasure at his part in the unsuccessful siege of Fuenterrabia in 1638, of his exile in England (1638-1643), and of his secret voyage to France to bring back his wife, daughter and possessions. The writer befriended the Duke during his exile and accompanied him on the voyage. Contemporary binding of mottled calf, gilt-tooled.
