Hallam Papers. Vol. vii e. Commonplace book. Inscribed ‘Ellen Hallam. Begun May 15th 1836’. The last entry is for 11 October 1836. This commonplace book comprises quotations from various religious writers, including Keble, Wesley, Cardinal Newman and Jeremy Taylor. On ff. 9-15 are copies of letters or extracts from letters in another hand (probably that of Julia Lennard).
ff. ii + 15. 192 x 162mm. Half binding of green leather with marbled boards and end-papers.
The letter copies and extracts are as follows:
1. ff.. 9-9v. is headed ‘Letter to Miss Duckworth from my dearest Mother, 1837, and relates to her loss of Eleanor. Copy. A note indicates that the letter and the following extracts were sent by Charlotte Duckworth to Julia M. F. Lennard on 9 March 1874.
2. ff. 10-10v. ‘Extract of letter to C. Clark on the christening of her child from my father [Henry Hallam], 17 June 1852’. This is addressed to Charlotte Clark née Duckworth. A note adds that the child died in Turin in the Spring of 1853.
3. ff. 11v-12. ‘Extract of a letter from Frances, Lady Verney found among Miss Duckworth’s papers …’ circa 1853. This relates to the death of Henry Fitzmaurice Hallam.
4. ff. 13v-15. ‘Extract from a letter of F[ranklin] Lushington to the Revd W. Bryant. Autumn of the year 1850’. This relates to the circumstances of Henry Fitzmaurice Hallam’s death. A note adds that Mr Bryant was a Cambridge friend who married a daughter of Bishop Lonsdale.
