Hallam Papers. Vol. vii e. Commonplace book. Inscribed ‘Ellen Hallam. Begun May 15^th 1836’. The last entry is for 11 October 1836. This commonplace book comprises quotations from various religious writers, including Keble, Wesley, Cardinal Newman and Jeremy Taylor. On ff. 9-15 are copies of letters or extracts from letters in another hand (probably that of Julia Lennard).

ff. ii + 15. 192 x 162mm. Half binding of green leather with marbled boards and end-papers.

The letter copies and extracts are as follows:

1. ff.. 9-9v. is headed ‘Letter to Miss Duckworth from my dearest Mother, 1837, and relates to her loss of Eleanor. Copy. A note indicates that the letter and the following extracts were sent by Charlotte Duckworth to Julia M. F. Lennard on 9 March 1874.

2. ff. 10-10v. ‘Extract of letter to C. Clark on the christening of her child from my father [Henry Hallam], 17 June 1852’. This is addressed to Charlotte Clark née Duckworth. A note adds that the child died in Turin in the Spring of 1853.

3. ff. 11v-12. ‘Extract of a letter from Frances, Lady Verney found among Miss Duckworth’s papers …’ circa 1853. This relates to the death of Henry Fitzmaurice Hallam.

4. ff. 13v-15. ‘Extract from a letter of F[ranklin] Lushington to the Revd W. Bryant. Autumn of the year 1850’. This relates to the circumstances of Henry Fitzmaurice Hallam’s death. A note adds that Mr Bryant was a Cambridge friend who married a daughter of Bishop Lonsdale.
