Eccles Bequest. Vol. XXVI. 'The Function of Criticism: A Dialogue'; [1890]. Autograph draft of essay with extensive corrections and revisions. This is possibly the basis for an article published in The Nineteenth Century, July-September 1890, entitled 'The True Function and Value in Criticism with some Remarks on the Importance of Doing Nothing: A Dialogue'. This was a response to Matthew Arnold's essay 'The Function and Criticism at the Present Time' (1865).
