CLIFFORD PAPERS. Vol. III (ff. 136). Papers of Clifford as Comptroller and Treasurer of the Royal Household (1666-1672) and as Treasury Commissioner and Lord Treasurer (1667-1673); temp. James I [between 1603-1625]-1673. Partly copies. The papers are very miscellaneous, consisting of proposals, orders, calculations concerning the revenue, lists of salaries of officials, etc., a few of them originating in the two previous reigns and, on the evidence of the endorsements, acquired by Clifford for reference purposes. The largest group consists of proposals and calculations, some in Clifford's hand, concerning the farm of the Excise and the proportions of taxation for the various regions; for Clifford's Treasury administration particularly in relation to this, see C. D. Chandaman, The English Public Revenue 1660-1688 (Oxford, 1975), esp. pp. 44-45, 62-63 and 230-231.
