WHITELOCKE MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. II. Bulstrode Whitelocke's annals of the first 29 years of his life (Aug. 1605-July 1634); mid 17th cent. This is the first volume of a series: subsequent volumes for 1634-1656 are now Add. 37343-37345 and 4992, in that order. The series was used in the posthumous compilation of Whitelocke's Memorials of the English affairs... (1682) and in R. H. Whitelocke, Memoirs, biographical and historical of Bulstrode Whitelocke (1860). The material is arranged under the years of Whitelocke's life, beginning in August and ending in late July. The present MS. was formerly preceded by a preface, dedicated to the author's children and dated 1 July 1664. This preface, which is now part of Add. 4992, ff. 2-13v, was probably removed by Dr Charles Morton, Principal Librarian of the British Museum 1776, who borrowed the present volume from Major John Carleton Whitelocke of Priorswood, Dublin, (see a note by Morton
f. 2v). Morton, who published an edition of Whitelocke's journal of his Swedish embassy in 1772, obtained other Whitelocke MSS., perhaps from the same source, which he presented to the British Museum (Add. 4902, 4991A-4995). Memoranda, chiefly about the Whitelocke family, and probably by James Whitelocke, grandson of Major John Carleton Whitelocke occur, circa 1864-1876 (ff. i, 1-2, 114v). The front fly-leaf
(f. ii), is cut from a deed granted by Carleton Whitelocke, then of Hersham, Surrey, June 1686.
Vellum fly-leaf, f. ii; ff. ii+115. Contemporary pagination pp. 25-245 through ff. 3-113v, p. 131 repeated. 305 x 193mm. Double columns. 18th cent. binding, boards covered with marbled paper. '1' on fore-edge.
