WHITELOCKE MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. III. Diary of Bulstrode White-locke; 1-30 Sept. 1653. The entries chiefly concern preparations for his embassy to Sweden, together with notes on relevant passages in scripture and records of conversations with members of his family. Lacks a title-page. Two related volumes in similar autograph format exist. Add. 31984, for 1-31 Aug. 1653, bears a title-page 'Whitelockes History of the fourty eight year of his Age' (f. 2), and a volume title 'Passages in August. 1653.' (f. 5). Add. 4994, 'Passages in November. 1653.' (f. i), covers 1-12 Nov. 1653. See also Eg. 997, which contains similar material for various days
1 Sept.-30 Nov. Whitelocke's journal of his Swedish embassy was printed from Add. 4902 by Dr C. Morton as A Journal of the Swedish Ambassy, in the years 1653 and 1654 . . . (1772). A revised edition, ed. H. Reeve, was published in 1855. The various MS. accounts show considerable textual difference. Marginal note signed 'G. W.', possibly George Whitelocke, great-grandson of Bulstrode, 18th-19th cent. (f. 63).
