C. 'Design for Kensington Gardens'; 1OOO ft. to 7' in. This shows the
Upper Garden north of the Palace as laid out by Henry Wise 1704-1711 (see D. Green, op. cit., PP. 75-77, P1S. 24, 25), but the scheme for the Gardens between the Palace and the Serpentine clearly antedates the work of Charles Bridgeman and Charles Withers 1726-1731, when the Round Pond was constructed and the Serpentine formed from the earlier series of pools (see W. L. Rutton, 'The Making of Kensington Gardens', Home Counties Magazine, vi, 1904, pp. 145-159, 222-23 1 ; P. A. Faulkner, 'A note on the gardens of Kensington Palace', Journ. Brit. Archaeol. Assoc., xiv, 3rd Ser., 1951, pp. 8-10). Like the plan, possibly by Wise, which Faulkner dates circ. 1705 or later (op. cit., p. 9 and pl. vii; cf. rotograph in the Department of Printed Books, Maps 181 g. 1), the present one shows a small oblong basin in the position of the Round Pond. Watermark as 42572 B.
928 mm. x 639 mm.
