NAPIER PAPERS. Vol. LXXXI. 'Military Sketch of Easthampstead Plain [co. Berks] and the adjacent country [round the Royal Military College, Sandhurst] drawn by W[illiam] Napier', presumably while a cadet at Sandhurst; bef. 10 Feb. 1835 (signature on verso). Imperfect, by the loss on the map's left-hand side of at least three of the sections in which it was executed. No scale survives, but it is 8 miles to 1 inch [1:7290]. No compass rose or points survive, but east at top. Extent: Potley Hill House (west), Obelisk (East), Sandhurst village (north), Hawley House (south). Shows hills, rivers, roads, tracks, woods and individual buildings. No key, but an extensive table under title in top right-hand corner gives militarily useful information on the area, e.g., width of roads and angle of slopes. Later annotations on the title and elsewhere on the map give additional place-names and the site of the Staff College.
640 x 425mm. Pen and ink and yellow-brown wash on six pieces of paper mounted in sections on linen.
