WILLIAM MORRIS LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. VIII (ff. ii + 14). The Story of Rhodope (C.W., v, pp. 208-248). A draft described by Morris on the original wrapper (f. iii) as 'Rough copy of Rhodope'. It corresponds to the printed text as far as p. 36 (f. 10b), with minor variants, and then diverges considerably although of roughly the same length. A draft of the alternative ending actually used, beginning at approximately this point in the tale, is in 45299, f. 44. The two drafts are compared and discussed in Morris, i, pp. 413-423, in which the stanzas from 'But now before the June was gotten old' (f. 10b) to 'May hang round my departing. Then she turned' (f. 12b) are printed. There is a note on f. ii 'This manuscript was given by William Morris to Philip Webb by whom it was bequeathed to me Emery Walker 7 Hammersmith Terrace London W. Nov. 28. 1915'. Red morocco binding by Katharine Adams.
Katharine Webb, d 1952 née Adams; bookbinder: Bound: bef. 1952.
Bindings ENGLISH: Red morocco, gilt-tooled, by K. Adams: 20th cent.
