45298-45337. LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS OF WILLIAM MORRIS (b. 1834, d. 1896), the poet and artist, including examples of work from all periods of his literary career. These MSS. are among those used by May Morris, his younger daughter, when preparing her Collected Works of William Morris (hereafter referred to as C.W.), 24 vols., 1910-1915, and the supplementary William Morris, Artist, Writer, Socialist (hereafter referred to as Morris), 2 vols., 1936, in which many of those unpublished in Morris's lifetime were printed and described for the first time. Many were also used by J. W. Mackail for The Life of William Morris, 2 vols., 1899, and by Philip Henderson for his Life of William Morris, 1967. In the numerous cases where Morris's draft differs slightly from the printed text, any passage quoted reproduces the MS. version unless it is misleadingly different. Unless otherwise stated all items are in one or other of Morris's different hands; a considerable change occurred, especially in his fair copies, after he took up calligraphic writing and book illumination, circ. 1870. For a general account of these MSS., the William Morris Papers (45338-45353), Morris's Journals (45407-45411) and the Kelmscott Manor Visitors' Book (45412) see also Brit. Mus. Quart., xiv, 1939-1940, pp. 8-12. A list of Morris MSS., excluding lectures, known by May Morris to exist in 1936 will be found in Morris, ii, pp. 607-611, but it is not complete.
