WILLIAM MORRIS LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. XXVII (ff. i + 65). 'Scenes From The Fall Of Troy', a dramatic poem begun circ. 1857 (see C.W., ii, p. xiv) but never completed. Apart from the copied fragments in 45298, ff. 107, 108, and 45308, ff. 195, 202, this appears to be the only extant MS. of the poem (but see under (d)). Most of it is printed by May Morris in C.W., xxiv, pp. 3-51, with alterations as recorded by her ibid., pp. xxvii-xxviii. Contents:-(a) 'Helen Arming Paris'. A draft (ff. 1-4), followed by a fair copy (ff. 5-16) as printed on pp. 3-8. ff. 1-16;-(b) 'The Defiance of the Greeks'. A draft (ff. 17-22b) followed by a fair copy partly (ff. 23-25) in the hand of his sister Emma (ff. 23-34) as printed on pp. 9-16. ff. 17-34;-(c) 'Hector's Last Battle', as printed on pp. 16-20. ff. 35-38;-(d) 'Hector brought dead to Troy', as printed on pp. 21-25. The first part is in a different hand (f. 38b), probably that of the original owner of the MS., with the note 'copied from another MS. in my possession'. ff. 38b-40b;-(e) 'Helens Chamber,' two versions, both as printed on pp. 32-40. ff. 41-50;-(f) 'Achilles' Love-Letter' as printed on pp. 25-32, followed by part of the beginning of another version (f. 56). ff. 51-56;-
(g) 'Hector brought dead to Troy,' a copy in the same hand as f. 38b (see (d)), of the last part of this section (f. 57b), corresponding to the text printed on pp. 23-25 and written on the verso of the title-page of the following. f. 57b;-(h) 'The Descent from the Wooden Horse,' as printed on pp. 41-45. ff. 57-59b;-(i) 'Helen and Menelaus,' as printed on pp. 44-51. ff. 60-64b. The MS. is bound in gold-tooled green levant morocco by Riviere. The price '£25/-/-' on f. 1 suggests that the MS. had passed through the saleroom at some time, but in 1936 it belonged to May Morris (see Morris, ii, p. 607).
