WILLIAM MORRIS LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. XXXVIII. (ff.187). Lectures and addresses on artistic subjects (cont.). As follows:-
(1) 'Of the Origins of Ornamental Art', delivered at New Islington Hall, Ancoats, Manchester, 26 Sept. 1886. The version in this MS., however, contains references to Windsor and St George's Chapel (f. 19) which suggest it was written for delivery in Windsor, though there is no evidence that this took place. Printed by Le Mire, op. cit., pp. 382-409, under this title, but first mentioned as 'Of the Origin of Decorative Art' (see Le Mire, op. cit., p. 479). [No. 12]. ff. 2-30.
(2) 'The History of Pattern Design', delivered to the Trades Guild of Learning at the Co-operative Institute, Castle St, London, 8 Apr. 1879. The MS. is incomplete, breaking off at '...faults that it shares with the ancient architecture of India, the earlier form of which...'; what remains agrees with the text printed as 'The History of Pattern- Designing' in C.W., xxii, pp. 206-234. [No. 14]. ff. 31-44.
(3) 'Art: A Serious Thing', delivered at the prizegiving of the Leek School of Art at the Temperance Hall, Leek, 12 Dec. 1882; printed by Le Mire, op. cit., pp. 309-331. [No. 15]. ff. 46-70.
(4) 'Early England', delivered to the Hammersmith Branch of the Socialist League at Kelmscott House, Hammersmith, 15 Dec. 1886; printed by Le Mire, op. cit., pp. 240-265. [No. 16]. ff. 72-95.
(5) Lecture beginning identically with 'The Prospects of Architecture in Civilization', which was delivered at the London Institution, Finsbury Circus, 10 Mar. 1881 (C.W., xxii, pp. 119-152), but then differing considerably from it. The MS. is incomplete, breaking off at '...they are not very numerous either I think, the sort of folk who do nothing and care for nothing...'. [No. 17]. ff. 96-1O5.
(6) 'Art and the Beauty of the Earth' delivered at the prizegiving of the schools of Science and Art of the Wedgwood Institute at Burslem Town Hall, 13 Oct. 1881. For text see C.W., xxii, pp. 155-174. The MS. lacks the first part and beg. at '...something should be done with it which is specially natural to it, something which could not be done with any other'. The lecture is listed under the title of 'England and the Arts' by Briggs, op. cit., p. 10. A MS. of a different version is in 45330, of which a typescript is the following article. ff. 106-113.
(7) A typewritten copy of the version of 'Art and the Beauty of the Earth' found in 45330 (q.v.), but with the title 'The Art of Pottery'. [No. 19]. ff. 115-139.
(8) 'Labour and Pleasure versus Labour and Sorrow' delivered to the Birmingham Society of Arts and the Birmingham School of Design at Birmingham Town Hall, 19 Feb. 1880, differing from the version printed as 'The Beauty of Life' in C.W., xxii, pp. 51-80. (Page 3 of the original pagination is missing, i.e. between f. 141 and f. 142.) [No. 20]. ff. 140-164.
(9) 'Gothic Architecture', the first Haldane Trust Lecture, delivered at the Corporation Galleries, Glasgow, 11 Feb. 1889. A different version is printed in Morris, i, pp. 266-286. The note by May Morris on f. 166 refers to a later delivery of the lecture to the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, 7 Nov. 1889. [No. 21]. ff. 166-186.
(10) Part of the last sentence of 'The Art of the People', delivered to the Birmingham Society of Arts and the Birmingham School of Design, 19 Feb. 1879, differing slightly from the text printed in C.W., xxii, pp. 28-50. f. 187.
