WILLIAM MORRIS LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. XXXIX (ff. 262). Lectures and addresses on political subjects. The items in 45333, 45334 are arranged in the order given in the list (ff. 1-10), which is in the hand possibly of Jenny Morris, with notes by May Morris. Since not all of these listed items are in the present collection, the list numbers are quoted in square brackets after each article. The note (f. 1) 'sent Nos. 1-23 to G. B. Shaw 4 Jany 1898' refers to an attempt by Sir Sydney Cockerell to get Shaw to edit the political lectures (Briggs, op. cit., p. 5). As follows:-
(1) 'Socialism'. Morris lectured many times under this title. The first verifiable occasion of its delivery was to the Oxford Branch of the Socialist League and the Oxford Marx Club, 9 June 1885, but it cannot be shown that the present text was used. The MS. is described and parts are quoted in Morris, ii, pp. 192-197. [No. 1]. ff. 13-26.
(2) 'Communism', first scheduled for delivery to the Hammersmith Socialist Society at Kelmscott House, Hammersmith, 19 Feb. 1893. The first verifiable delivery was at Grafton Hall, London, 10 Mar. 1893. Printed C.W., xxiii, pp. 264-276. [No. 2]. ff. 41-54.

[No. 4]. ff. 70-107.
(5) 'Commercial War', delivered to the Croydon Branch of the Social Democratic Federation at Crown Hill, Croydon, 27 Mar. 1885. An extract is quoted in Morris, ii, p. 311. [No. 5]. ff. 109-131.

(7) 'Art and the People. A Socialist's Protest against Capitalist Brutality; Addressed to the Working Classes', the title written by Morris on f. 153 of the MS. Written according to May Morris, Morris, ii, p. 368, soon after Morris joined the Democratic Federation (January 1883). Printed in Morris, ii, pp. 382-406. Mentioned by Le Mire only in his Addenda, op. cit., p. 532. [No. 7]. ff. 153-183.
(8) Notes, probably a working copy, headed 'What is: What should be: What will be: What may be'. The only clue to its place or time of delivery is the note '[1893]' pencilled on f. 185. A few sections are quoted in Morris, ii, pp. 356-357. Mentioned by Mire only in his Addenda, op. cit., p. 533. [No. 9]. ff. 185-191.
(9) 'Socialism: The End and the Means', delivered to the Manchester Branch of the Socialist League at the Ardwick Temperance Hall, Manchester, 27 Sept. 1886. The bulk of the lecture (up to f. 207) is printed in Morris, ii, pp. 420-434, under the title of 'The End and the Means'. [No. 10]. ff. 193-212.
(10) 'Equality', delivered to the Clapham Common Branch of the Social Democratic Federation on Clapham Common, 30 Sept. 1888. Parts are printed in Morris, ii, pp. 197-203. [No. 11]. ff. 214-232.
