WILLIAM MORRIS LITERARY MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. XL (ff. 227). Lectures and addresses on political subjects (cont.), and miscellaneous papers, mainly political, viz.:-
(1) 'Socialism up to Date', delivered to a meeting sponsored by the Ancoats Recreation Committee at the New Islington Hall, Ancoats, Manchester, 4 Oct. 1891. The lecture is partly in note form. Parts are printed in Morris, ii, pp. 341-343. [No. 14]. ff. 3-12.
(2) 'Art and Labour', delivered to the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society at the Philosophical Hall, Leeds, 1 Apr. 1884; printed by Le Mire, op. cit., pp. 188-218. [No. 15]. At ff. 47-49 are three folios only of another version of this lecture. [No. 16]. ff. 15-49.
(3) 'Our Country Right or Wrong', so named by May Morris on the wrapper (f. 50). On f. 76 Morris has written 'W. M. Jan 30th 1880 2.30 A.M. Kelmscott House Upper Mall Hammersmith'. According to May Morris (Morris, ii, p. 53) it was delivered 'to some Radical body'. Much of it is printed in Morris, ii, pp. 53-62. Mentioned by Le Mire only in his Addenda, op. cit., p. 532. [No. 17]. ff. 51-76.
(4) 'The Depression of Trade', delivered to the Oldham Branch of the Socialist League at the Large Hall, Royton, Manchester, 12 July 1885. A note (f. 79) by May Morris '11 July 1885 Oldham' appears to be mistaken. Printed by Le Mire, op. cit., pp. 219-239. [No. 18]. At f. 99 are notes on the depression of trade and agriculture, with a newspaper cutting on the subject. ff. 79-99.
(5) 'The Present Outlook in Politics', probably the lecture scheduled for delivery to the Hammersmith Branch of the Socialist League at Kelmscott House, Hammersmith, 18 Dec. 1887. Printed by Le Mire, op. cit., pp. 265-286, and listed by Briggs, op. cit., p. 14, under the title of 'The Present Aspect of Politics'. [No. 19]. ff. 101-117.
(6) 'Misery and the Way Out', delivered to the Borough of Southwark Branch of the Social Democratic Federation at the Queen's Bench Coffee Rooms, London, 8 Sept. 1884. Parts are printed in Morris, ii, pp. 150-164. [No. 21]. ff. 119-144.
(7) The last three leaves of a lecture on Socialism, containing an appeal to the audience to support the Democratic Federation. This dates the MS. before Morris's resignation from the Federation in December 1884. [No. 22]. ff. 145-147.
(8) Address delivered at the opening of the Fourth Annual Loan Exhibition, Whitechapel, 8 Apr. 1884. Parts are printed in Morris, ii, pp. 164-169. [No. 23]. ff. 151-167.
