BLECHYNDEN PAPERS. Vol. I. Narrative by R. Blechynden, as an officer of the East Indiaman 'Godfrey', of the ship's capture on 9 Aug. 1780, with others of a convoy attacked by the combined Spanish and French fleets (cf. Sir W. L. Clowes, The Royal Navy, iii, 1898, pp. 477- 478), his imprisonment at various places in Spain, a subsequent journey through Portugal from Villa Real to Lisbon, and his return to England; 25 July 1780-13 Jan. 1781. Included are journals kept by Blechynden of:-
(1) the Portuguese ship 'Nostrua Seignora (sic) de Rosario St Antonio' on a voyage from Lisbon to Cork; 23 Oct.-26 Nov. 1780. ff. 88-105b;-(2) the brig 'Charlotte' from Cork to Monkstown; 17-18 Dec. 1780. ff. 117b- 118b;-(3) the brig 'Susannah' from Cork to Bristol; 1-7 Jan. 1781. ff. 120b-124. Paper; ff. v + 126. Quarto. Inserted as f. v is a coloured sketch of a soldier. Contemporary binding of red leather, gilt-tooled.
