DIARIES, ETC., OF RICHARD BLECHYNDEN (d. 1822), Civil Architect and Surveyor to the East India Company in Calcutta, 1780-1822 and (vols. LXXVII-LXXIX) of his eldest son and assistant, Arthur Heselridge Blechynden; circ. 1806-1812, followed (vols. LXXXV, LXXXVI) by two other MSS.; 1720-1822. The diaries (vols. IV-LXXXIV), which include some plans and sketches, partly relate to the professional activities of the compilers and of R. Blechynden's predecessor in office, Edward Tiretta (see Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, British Government in India, 1925, i, p. 40), to whom he acted as Deputy until 1803. They were used by Kathleen Blechynden, sister of the donor, for her Calcutta Past and Present (1905), in which extracts (with variations) are printed from vol. XII, ff. 180, 181b, 185b-187 (pp. 156-158) and vol. XVIII, ff. 42, 45 (pp. 69-70). A pedigree of the Blechynden family is in Add. MS. 45680, ff. 157-161. On the family's relationship with that of W. M. Thackeray, the novelist, see G. N. Ray, Thackeray: the Uses of Adversity, 1955, pp. 49, 445. Eighty-six volumes. Circ. 1720-1822. Inserted at the beginning of vol. I (ff. i-iii) are statements by the donor's executors, 1940, relating to permission for the publication of the papers. Vol. XLIII contains (f. 1) a list, 1802, by R. Blechynden, of manuscript material then in his possession, and (inserted as f. ii) a note, 1906, by the donor, of MSS. owned by himself. A printed label bearing the name of Charles Edward Blechynden, third son of A. H. Blechynden, and father of the donor, inserted in vol. XVII (f. i), indicates that the diaries were at one time in his possession. Bequeathed by Richard Blechynden, Esq., great-grandson of the compiler.
