PALGRAVE MANORIAL RECORDS. Vol. I. Register of charters, rental, etc.; one of a series compiled under William Curteys, Abbot 1429-1446, containing the evidences of individual manors belonging to Bury St Edmunds Abbey (see G. R. C. Davis, Medieval Cartularies of Great Britain, 1958, nos. 99-104, and the description of Add. MS. 42055 in the Catalogue of Additions 1926-1930). Latin and English. The contents are as follows:-
(1) Statement of the evidence for the Abbey's title to Palgrave (beg. 'Palgrave Contulit Sancto Edmundo Þurketil') with transcripts of charters and surveys relating to the manor and to the chapel of St John; 963 [?962]- 1350. Explicit references are mostly given to the Abbey's registers (for which see Davis, op. cit., nos. 95-134; they include Harley MS. 230, cited as 'Registrum Thome Abbatis') and to the original documents used. The form and contents, as in the corresponding sections of other registers in the series, are closely related to the lists of evidences compiled by John de Lakenhethe (Harley MS. 743, ff. 4-51; for Palgrave see ff. 34b-35), but with some additional references and material mainly from registers of the Vestiarius (Davis, op. cit., nos. 118, 119). Included are copies of (a) Wulfstan's grant of land at Palgrave and the early 11th-cent. will of Thurketil (ff. 1, 1b, printed, from generally inferior texts, by W. de G. Birch, Cartularium Saxonicum, 1885-1893, no. 1084, and D. Whitelock, Anglo- Saxon Wills, 1930, no. XXIV, respectively; the present manuscript dates the former 963 instead of 962, and includes a signing clause after the subscription of Bishop Athulf and an endorsement, both omitted from the text printed). ff. 1-1b;-(b) the relevant portions both of the Feudal Book of Abbot Baldwin, [1087-1098] (see D. C. Douglas, Feudal Documents from the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, 1932, p. 10) and of the surveys of Bury manors before Solomon de Roffense, [1286] (printed, except the final paragraph (for which cf. f. 56), by Lord Francis Hervey, The Pinchbeck Register, 1925, ii, p. 32, from a variant text; for another copy see Harley MS. 743, ff. 149b-150). f. 2. The grant of circ. 1206-1211 (ff. 10b-11) has been printed in The Kalendar of Abbot Samson, ed. R. H. C. Davis, Camden Third Series, vol. 84, 1954, p. 148. ff. 1-12.
(2) Rental of the manor dated the 23rd year of Abbot Richard de Draughton [1334-1335]; at the beginning are the names of the jury. ff. 12-15b.
(3) Terrier of tenants' lands dated, incompletely, 'anno domini Johannis de Brynkelee Abbatis' [1361-1379]; the tenants are listed under the headings 'Nethergate' (f. 16), 'North'gatestrete' (f. 17b) and 'Westgate' (f. 19). ff. 16-26.
(4) Rental of the manor, including (f. 47) land in Wortham, giving throughout the detailed locations of lands, dated 10 Ric. II and the 4th year of Abbot John de Tymworth [June-Dec. (?) 1386]. Presumably drawn up at the same time is the rental headed (f. 51) 'Terre dominicales ibidem ad firmam dimisseex antiquo per Consilium domini tote ville et c". ff. 26b-53.
(5) Documents copied from the Abbey's registers, cited as in art. 1, viz.:-(a) presentment of the abbot's jurisdictional claim in Brockford, Palgrave, Redgrave and Wortham (all co. Suff.) before the king's justices. 14 Edw. I [1285-1286]. f. 56;-(b) list of tenants and rents in Palgrave, [mid 13th cent.?]. ff. 56-56b;-(c) list of tenants in Palgrave and Wortham, giving the rents and services due from each, [late 12th cent.?]. ff. 56b-58b; -(d) return to the writ Quo Warranto concerning the Abbot's jurisdiction in Brockford, Palgrave, Redgrave and Wortham [1286], printed in Placita de Quo Warranto, Record Commission, 1818, f. 58b;-(e) extracts from court rolls concerning land in Palgrave, [after 1312]. ff. 58b, 59. Vellum; ff. ii + 60. 405 mm. x 275 mm. [1429- 1446]. Gatherings, i-iv12, v2 (2 cancelled), vi10 (10 cancelled); catchwords on ff. 12b, 24b, 36b, 48b. Binding, vellum, apparently contemporary; probably intended to be kept rolled (cf. Add. MS. 42055). On the front cover is written 'Beate marie genetrisis (sic) Liber de hominibus (?) manerii' (15th cent.) and on the spine 'Survey of the Manor of Palgrave' (18th cent). 16th-cent. scribblings inside the back and front covers include (f. ib) 'The boke of banham In the com' norff", 'Per me Willelmum gylle of banham in com", and the name 'thomas spynke'.
