BAGLIONI LETTER-BOOKS. VOL. I. Dispatches to and from Cardinal Francesco Barberini, Cardinal Marzio Ginetti, and to papal nuncios Campeggi, Bolognetti, Stravius, Visconti, Vitelli, and Alfieri; 1634-1638. Italian and Latin. Copies. The dispatches are divided into books, each but the first introduced by a title-page. Marginal notes 'Cifra' or 'P' at beginning set a distinction for dispatches originally sent in cipher. 1. ff. 1-7. Dispatches from the Secretary of State Cardinal F. Barberini to Cardinal Ciriaco Rocci; 18 Nov. - 23 Dec. 1634. Inc. 'Di Roma li 18 novembre 1634. Al Signor Cardinale Rocci / Il Residente dell'Imperatore in Venetia si dolse acremente in Coleggio'.
2. ff. 6v-188. Dispatches from the Secretary of State Cardinal F. Barberini and his secretaries to Malatesta Baglioni; 2 Dec. 1634 - 24 Jan. 1637. Inc. 'Di Roma li 2 dicembre 1634 / A Monsignor Nuntio Baglioni / Della rimessa fatta ultimamente'. Subdivided into three books (ff. 6v, 31, 60) for the years 1634-1635, four books (ff. 91, 101, 128, 152) for the year 1636, one book (ff. 180) for the year 1637, with titles, 'Registro delle Cifre di Palazzo' (f. 31) or 'Cifere [sic] che si riceveranno da Palazzo' (f. 60), etc. Including: - (a) ff. 105-106, copy of letter from Muzio Vitelleschi, General of the Jesuits, to Father Guillaume Lamormain, confessor of Ferdinand II, in Latin, 15 March 1636; - (b) ff. 109-109v, list of ministers plenipotentiaries for the Emperor and for France, 15 March 1636; - (c) ff. 132v-133, dispatch from Cardinal Ginetti, 25 June 1636; - (d) ff. 176v-177, copy of a brief from Pope Urban VIII to Louis XIII, in Latin, dated 6 Dec. 1636.
3. ff. 189-223. 'Registro delle Cifre che si inviaranno a Palazzo', dispatches from Malatesta Baglioni to Rome; 2 Dec. 1634 - 20 Jan. 1635, 26 Apr. - 3 May 1636. Inc. (f. 190) 'Naistod li 2 dicembre 1634 / Al Signor Cardinal Padrone / Sento dal Residente di Polonia la risolutione'. Subdivided into two books (ff. 189, 217), and including (ff. 199-200) a summary of the articles proposed for the Treaty of Peace (Prague, 1635) between Emperor Ferdinand II and the Elector of Saxony John George, 27 Dec. 1634.
4. ff. 224-296. 'Minute in cifera [sic] di Secreteria', dispatches from Malatesta Baglioni to Cardinal F. Barberini, Cardinal M. Ginetti and other papal nuncios; 22 Sept. 1635 - 9 Dec. 1636. Inc. (f. 225) '22 settembre 1635 / A Monsignor Campeggi. Madrid / Circa la Prefettura io non ho che aggiungere'. Subdivided into three books (ff. 224, 247, 272).
5. ff. 297-318v. 'Cifere [sic] che si riceveranno dal Signor Cardinal Legato Ginetti', dispatches from Cardinal Marzio Ginetti to Malatesta Baglioni; 26 July 1636 – 25 Sept. 1638. Inc. 'Bologna 26 luglio 1636. Il Cardinal Legato, Ricevuta e decifrata in Ratisbona li 7 agosto / Il Duca d'Alcalà si è doluto'. Subdivided into two books (ff. 297, 310), and including (ff. 311-311v) a dispatch from Francesco Vitelli, dated 'Venezia 16 gennaio 1637'.
6. ff. 318v-321v. 'Lettera del Signor Duca di Parma al Cancelliere Carandini suo Residente in Roma'; n.d. Inc. 'Il Duca Pier Luigi Farnese fu soldato'.
Paper; ff. 318+ii, plus two unfoliated interleaved blanks after f. 223. Modern foliation in pencil '1-321' (followed here), omitting nos. 14, 81, 164. 304 x 216mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf, and on each page from f. 224 (hand 2). Two Italian hands: - (1) ff. 1-223; - (2) ff. 224-321v.
