Origin:
Italy (Bologna?).
Provenance:
Added two notarial records of 1233 signed in Radicofani (province of Siena, Italy), the first in the house of Arnold Guerardi, incipit: 'In nomine domini domini anno domini millesimo cc xxx iii indic. vi tercio nonas Genuaryj que in presentia et testimonium Graccij Arnoldi... actum Radicofane in Burgo Maiori domini domum Arnoldi Guerardi' (f. 240r), and the second in the house of Alexander Albonerti (?) and relating to a sale, incipit: 'Actum in Borgo Maiori Radicofani in domo Alexandrii Albonerti anno domini m. cc iii indict. v per die nonas Genuarii' (f. 240v).
John Gibson (fl. 1720-1726), dealer; sold to Edward Harley on 22 June 1726 (see Wright 1972); included in Humfrey Wanley's list of 53 manuscripts sent to Edward Harley on 22 February 1724 as 'Xodex Justineaneus, cum glossis quibusdam. manu Ital. vet. - Constitutio F(rederici) Imperatoris. fol. membr. [£10. 0s. 0d]' (see Diary 1966).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘22 die mensis Junii, A.D. 1726’ (f. 1r).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), Duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
