Justinian, Codex, incipit (rubric): 'In nomine nostri iesu christi codicis domini iustiniani repetite prelectionis liber primus incipit. R. de novo codice componendo R.'; preface: Constitution 'Hec que necessario', incipit: '[I]mperator Iustinianus as senatem. [h]ec que necessario'; in 9 books (ff. 4v, 28v, 44r, 60v, 84v, 103r, 114r, 142v, 186r); with numerous pre-Accursian glosses added in the 12th and early 13th centuries. The sigla and names of the glossators identified by Dolezalek (1985 and 2012) are: Irnerius; Bulgarus, including his Summula de iuris et facti ignorantia (commentary to C.1.18, f. 21v); Otto Papiensis; Johannes Bassianus; Martinus Gosia; Albericus de Porta Ravennata; Placentinus; Rogerius; Henricus de Baila; Pilius; Cyprianus; Lotharius; Karolus de Tocco; Azo, including excerpts from his Lectura Codicis (f. 28v); and Accursius, excerpts from his Apparatus ad Codicem (or glossa ordinaria).
Decoration:
Spaces left for large initials at the beginning of books. Display script in red or in red and black at the beginning of books. Outline initials in brown ink, some surmounted with human heads or in the form of a fish, a snake, or a bird, at the beginning of titles. Initials in red at the beginning of each inscriptio and each law.
