Arabic-Ottoman Turkish Vocabulary
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains a versified Arabic-Ottoman Turkish vocabulary that does not include the author''s name. In a prologue in mesnevi, the work is described as an improved and enlarged recension of the vocabulary composed by Ferişteoğlu, the versification of which, according to the author, was not free from grievous faults. It contains thirty-three kıt''alar, the first of which begins as in the original work, but with a slight change in the second hemistich.
Abdullatif İbn-i Abdülaziz, called in Arabic Ibn al-Malak, and in Ottoman Turkish Ferişteoğlu, was one of the great Ulema of the reign of Bayezit II, to whom he dedicated his Mebariku''l-Ezhar. He died, as stated in the marginal additions to the Keşfu''z-Zunun (Or 3144, ff 446 and 527) before 879 AH (1474-75 CE). The author of this enlarged recension follows the order of the original work and makes use of the same rhymes, but in two cases one kıt''a is enlarged to two, and some new ones are added at the end.
The manuscript was copied by Mehmet İbn-i Şeyhi Ahmet İbn-i el-Hacc Mehmet Anabolu eş-Şehir bi-tavil in İzmir in the month of Şaaban 1101 AH (May-June 1690 AH).
