2. Royal order to Agustin de Arredondo, Governor of Trinidad, instruction him to punish the Carib murdered of thee French Bishop Nicolas Herbasio [Gervaise], who had settled on the R. 3. Agustin de Arredondo, Governor of Trinidad, to the king, reporting his fifth visit to Guayana, his summoning the Carib cheifs to an assembly, in which they cleared themselves of the murder of the French bishop and accused the cheif Iaguaria, whom they promise to surrender, his rewarding them with presents and investing them with insignia as vassal chiefs of Spain, ete. ; Trinidad, 5 June, 1731. 6. Christoval Feliz de Guzman, Governor of Trinidad, to the king, on the necessity of repelling foreign invasion, encouraging the missions and opposing Dutch aggression, and proposing the construction of a fort in the " Angostura " of the R. Orinoco and the increase of colonisation; [1732]. f. 67.

7. The sameto the same, on his services, petitioning for the succession of Carlos Sucre's command in regard to the erection of the fort on the Orinoco, etc. ; [1732]. f. 74.

8. Minute of the Council of the Indies, adverse to the project of Christoyal Phelix de Guzman, formerly Governor of Trinidad and Guayana, for the construction of the fort on the R. Orinoco as above, and discussing at length the relations of the Dutch and Caribs, the present position of Spain on the Orinoco, etc.; Madrid, 17 Oct. 1732. f. 78. 11. Minute of the same, on news sent from Trinidad, 22 Dec. 1732, of Swedish and French settlements in the Island of Tabaco, of the Swedish settlement of Barima on a branch of the Orinoco, and of the designs of a Carib chief, son of Jaguaria; 20 Nov. 1733. f. 145.

12. The Council of the Indies to the king, on the paucity of Capuchin missionaries in Trinidad and Guayana and their ignorance of the native language, and recommending the despatch of twelve priests and a teacher of the language, etc.; Madrid, 16 Mar. 1733. f. 149.

The Alcaldes, Governors ad interim, of La Trinidad, to the king, on the continual troubles caused by the Caribs, their attacks on the Jesuit missions and the support given to them by the Dutch, the despatch of Agustin de Arredondo against them and the difficulty of repressing them except by fortifying Guayana; Trinidad, 24 Sept. 1733. f. 156. 15. Record of a Council, convened 19 Mar. 1734 in Santo Thome de la Guayana by Col. Carlos de Suere, Governor of Guayana, etc., wherein it was resolved, in order to provide food for his forces, to apply for aid to the Dutch colony of Virbis [Berbice] and Esquibo, giving horses in exchange, as money was not procurable. f. 248. The Alcaldes of Trinidad to the king, reporting that the services of the Nepuio Indians against the Caribs had prevented their crops being attended to and therefore they are unable to pay tribute, and desiring instructions; Trinidad, 20 July, 1734. f. 262. The Council of the Indies to the king, on a memorial of the Proctor of the Capichin Missions of Guayana complaining that the Indians desert them and asking for twenty-five families from the Canary Isles to form a colony for the protection of the missions, which request the Council supports; Madrid, 27 Aug. 1734. f. 279. 20. Decree of the Council, pointing out the neglect of all royal orders respecting the fortification of the R.
