BROUGHTON PAPERS. Literary remains of John Cam Hobhouse, Baron Broughton, viz. :-
1. " MSS. of the Notes, and Historical Illustrations, of Canto IV. of Childe Harold. All but the essay and the translations were written at Venice and at La Mira in the autumn of 1817 and winter." Almost entirely in the hand of Hobhouse, who has indicated by the words " for C. H." and " for the other volume " the distribution of the work, as here originally written, into the two volumes, the Notes published with the poem, and the Historical Illustrations published separately, both in 1818. There are gaps in the MS.between ff. 20 and 21, 33 and 34, 53 and 54, 56 and 57, and 175 and 176. In two cases (ff. 13, 212 b) the text was printed from the rough draft (see art. 3 below, fF. 409, 546). The materials for the "Essay on Italian Literature" were supplied by Ugo Foscolo in 1818 and adapted by Robhouse (see Foscolo's letter to Hobhouse, 36457, f. 15, and Hobhouse's Italy, 1859, ii. p. 378). ff. 1-346.
2. Extracts concerning the ruins of Rome, etc., made for the above work. At f. 390 are four stanzas on the Forum by Hobhouse in the metre of Childe Harold. fr. 347-401.
3. Rough drafts, etc., of portions of the same work. The numbering of the stanzas differs largely from that of the printed poem [from stanza 10 = stanza 11 to stanza 121 = stanza 152]. The notes on stanzas 30 and 174 (ff. 409, 546) are the fair copies used by the printers. ff. 402-553.
4. Analysis of Vedute degli antiche vestigj di Roma, by Alo Giovannoli (Rome, 1750?, fol.). ff. 554-561.
5. Criticism of Rome in the nineteenth century, etc., by Charlotte A. Eaton (Edinburgh, 1820). ff. 562-583.
6. Notes for Some account [elsewhere Recollections] of a long life, by Lord Broughton, five volumes of which were privately printed in 1865. At f. 596 is the proof of the first six pages of a sixth volume, dated 1867. ff. 584-601.
7. Miscellaneous papers. ff. 602-611. Paper; ff. 611. Folio.
