TINDALL CORRESPONDENCE AND PAPERS. Vol. II (ff. 117). Typewritten copies (a) of the above letters, presenting slight inaccuracies and omissions, and (b) of the following material, viz:-
(1) Hymns by Ann Tindall, numbered 39 (with a comment by John Wesley, f. 7), 60, 61 and 62; March-April 1774. Typewritten from the originals now in Add. MS. 43740, ff. 68b-71, with the exception of Hymn no. 39 which was retained by the donor. ff. 6-12.
(2) Hymns by John Cennick, Methodist preacher. Contemporary copies with typewritten transcript, viz:-(a) 'A Hymn at Meeting a Friend.' Printed with verbal variations in his Sacred Hymns for the Children of God in the Days of their Pilgrimage, 2nd ed., 1741, pp. 42-43. f. 17 (transcript, f. 18);-(b) 'at parting with a Friend, a Hymn'. Printed, with an additional stanza after the third and other variations, op. cit., pp. 46-47. f. 19 (contemporary copy, f. 17b);-(c) Beg. 'Shall Children of the Lord, most high'. Omits stanzas 7, 8 and 11 of the printed version, op. cit., PP. 71-73. ff. 21-22 (contemporary copy, ff. 23b-24).
(3) 'A Hymn on a Birthday', by Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley, beg. 'God of my life to Thee'. Contemporary COPY (ff. 23-23 b) with typewritten transcript. Printed, with the addition of two stanzas after the fourth, in his Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1749, i, pp. 211-212, and in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley, vol. v, 1869, pp. 15-17. In other editions, A Collection of Hymns, for the use of the people called Methodists, 1780, pp. 221-222,.and 1875, pp. 218-219, and The Methodist Hymn-Book [1904], pp. 743-744, the third and fourth stanzas are partly transposed and the fifth replaced with an additional stanza; the last collection also omits the second stanza. ff. 23-23 b, 26-27.
(4) Two poems by Ann Tindall, typewritten, from The Arminian Magazine, i, 1778, pp. 482-484, and ii, 1779, pp. 323-326, entitled, 'To Stella', and 'Lines written on reading Stella's Account of the Deceitfulness of Human Friendship'. ff. 57-59, 62-64.
(5) 'Reflections...', a poem by Ann Tindall on the death of John William Fletcher al. de la Flechere, Vicar of Madeley; 14 Aug. 1785. Typewritten, from an original formerly at Sidmouth. Followed (f. 109) by a portrait of Fletcher engraved by James Thomson after the original by John Jackson, R.A. ff. 103-l08. At the beginning of the volume (f. 2) is a mezzotint (1825) by William Ward, A.R.A., of the Christ Church, Oxford, replica of the portrait of John Wesley by George Romney (see T. H. Ward and W. Roberts, Romney, 1904, ii, p. 169).
