NOWELL TRANSCRIPTS. Vol. II (ff. iv+ 110). Transcripts, etc., by Nowell as follows, viz.:-(1) Transcript of the Peterborough Chronicle from Bodleian MS. Laud Mise. 636 (MS. E of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle),
made in 1565 (see Nowell's inscription, f. 2), possibly while the original MS. was in the possession of Sir William Cecil, who is said by Joscelyn (Cotton MS. Nero C. iii, f. 208) to have owned it; Joscelyn also refers to a transcript by Nowell, presumably the present MS. ff. 2-91b;-(2) Extracts from the Abingdon Chronicle from Cotton MS. Tiberius B. i, ff. 1 is b-164 (MS. C of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle). According to Joscelyn, loc. cit., the latter was in Nowell's time in the possession of William Bowyer. ff. 94-107b;-
(3) Extracts from the Worcester Chronicle from Cotton MS. Tiberius B. iv, ff. 3-86 (MS. D of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle), up to circ. 1567 still at Worcester, but possibly at the time of Nowell's transcript in Joscelyn's hands, see I. Atkins, 'The Origin of the Later Part of the Saxon Chronicle Known as D', EngL Hist. Rev., lv, 1940, pp. 25-26. ff. 108-110. Also copied into the MS. are two small miscellaneous items, viz.-(4) Extract from the Old English Orosius, headed 'Ex Orosio in Anglicum traducto ab Elfredo rege ut putatus', beg. 'Julius se Cæsar fór on bryttanie', and end. 'Æfter pam Julius for to rome' (cf. King Alfred's Orosius, ed. H. Sweet, E.E.T.S., Original Ser., no. 79, 1883, pp. 238, 240). The text does not agree with those found in Cotton MS. Tiberius B. i (cf. art. 2 above) or Add. MS. 47967 (the Helmingham Hall Orosius). f. 1;-(5) A list of merchants at several places in Essex and elsewhere, transcribed, according to Nowell's heading, 'Ex fragmento quodam antiqui libri Saxonici', but not further identiflable. f. 110b.
