NOWELL TRANSCRIPTS
- Scope & Content:
-
Transcripts of Old English and other material made for the most part by Laurence Nowell, Dean of Lichfield (d. 1576); 1562-1566 and n.d. Nowell's transcripts appear to have been given by him before his death to William Lambarde (d. 1601), the Kentish antiquary, and at least five of the volumes included in the present series are identifiable in the list of collectanea remaining in the possession of the latter's descendant, Multon Lambard (d. 1836), of Sevenoaks, published in Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica (ed. J. Nichols), i, 1780-1790, pp. 510-512. Part of the family library (not including any of the present MSS.) was sold at Hodgson's, 19 June 1924, lots 504-549. See further R. Flower, 'Laurence Nowell and the Discovery of England in Tudor Times', Proceedings of the British Academy, xxi, 1935, pp. 47-73, and Brit. Mus. Quart., viii, 1933-1934, pp. 130-132. Eight vols. Paper. Small quarto. Presented (with twenty-eight early printed books, some bearing Lambarde's annotations) by Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis, 8th Baron Howard de Walden.
