NOWELL TRANSCRIPTS. Vol. III (ff. iv+ 102). Extracts by Nowell made in 1566 'Ex Mariano Scoto' (see the inscription f. 3), i.e. from a MS. of the Marianus Scotus-Florence of Worcester Chronicle, stated by Lambarde (see his inscriptions, ff. 2b, 3) to have been in the possession of the administrators of the estate of Dr Wotton, i.e. Nicholas Wotton, Dean of York and Canterbury, d. 1566. The extracts cover the period A.D. 743 to A. D. 1101, and end imperfectly (f. 98 b) in the latter year with the words I ablati comes redderet absque pretio. Quibus paca[tis]' (= Florentii Wigorniensis Monachi Chronicon ex Chronicis, ed. B. Thorpe, ii, 1848, p. 49). Marginal notes by Lambarde throughout. A copy of the present transcript made by several hands (two of which also appear in Harley MS. 359, see the description of Add. MS. 43706 following) is in Harley MS. 556. From it John Stow also made, in 1572, a copy of the English translation, now Harley MS. 563, ff. 51-119b. The inscription 'A Topographicall Description of Some Parts of England' (f. i; repeated on the spine, f. i) shows that the volume was originally intended for use in connection with Nowell's and Lambarde's researches on the mapping and topography of England, for which cf. Nowell's maps and notes in Cotton MS. Domitian xviii, and Lambarde's Perambulation of Kent; see also R. Flower, 'Laurence Nowell' passim.
