NOWELL TRANSCRIPTS. Vol. V (ff. iv+61). Extracts, etc., by Nowell, made in 1566 (see the inscription, f. 1), all apparently from a MS. then in the possession of William Bowyer (see the memorandum by William Lambarde on f. 49). The latter MS. was also the source of excerpts and transcripts by Nowell and Thynne in Cotton MS. Vitellius E. v, for which see further below. As follows:-(1) William of Malmesbury, De Antiquitate Glastoniensis Ecclesiae. Another copy of the work, made by Francis Thynne in 1592 either from the present MS. or from a second transcript by Nowell, is in Cotton M S. Vitellius E. v, ff. 131b- 1 47. ff. 1b-32 b;-(2) Sir Thomas de la More, Vita et Mors Edwardi Secundi. Other copies or excerpts of the work, made from the Bowyer MS., are in Cotton MS. Vitellius E. v, ff. 127b-128b (by Francis Thynne) and ff. 261-270 (by Nowell), and in Harley MS. 310, ff. 92-102 (unidentified, late 16th cent.). On the relationship of these various transcripts see Stubbs' introduction to Chronicles of the Reigns of Edward I and II, Rolls Series, vol. II, 1883, pp. Ivii-lxxv passim. The Vita was first published by William Camden, Anglica, Normannica, Hibernica, Cambrica a veteribus scripta, Frankfurt, 1602, pp. 593-603, and Stubbs, op. cit., took his text from this edition with collations from Cotton MS. Vitellius E. v, Harley MS. 310, and Bodleian MS. Bodley 761. ff. 3 3-49;-(3) 'Appendix hystorix Hybernicæ': extracts from the Chronicle of Henry of Marlborough for the years 1369-1421 (ff. 54-59b) and 1433 (f. 52). The extracts are presumably from the same Bowyer MS. as artt. i and 2. Two other copies are preserved in Cotton MS. Vitellius E. v, ff. 197-260 (by Nowell) and ff. 128b-131b (by Thynne). ff. 52, 54-59b.
