NOWELL TRANSCRIPTS. Vol. VII (ff. iii+ 24). Transcripts, in an unidentified hand, of charters of the Royal Hospital of St Katharine-by-the- Tower, now the Royal Foundation of St Katharine, in Ratcliffe, London. Latin, with descriptive captions at the head of each charter in English. The transcripts were possibly made in connexion with the appeal of the inhabitants of the precinct of the hospital to Sir William Cecil, in 1564, against the proposal of Wilson, Master 1561-1581, to abolish the precinct, see C. Jamison, The History of the Royal Hospital of St Katharine by the Tower of London, 1952, p. 74. Nowell lived at Cecil's house as tutor of the Earl of Oxford from some time before 1563 to circ. 1567, see R. Flower, 'Laurence Nowell', pp. 51, 60. The upper cover (f. 1) bears an inscription in Nowell's hand 'The Olde and New Ch[a]r[t]e[r]s for St Katharines'. Artt. 2 and 3 have marginal captions in English to sections of the text in a contemporary hand that also appears in Harley MS. 359 (e.g. f. 49b). A transcript by John Stow of the charters in artt. 2 and 3, made apparently from the present MS., is in Harley MS. 544, ff. 80-95; from the latter they were printed by A. C. Ducarel, History of the Royal Hospital and Collegiate Church of St Katharine, 1782, in Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica, ii, 1790, Appendices VI, VII, PP. 38-53. Contents:-(1) Grant by Queen Eleanor of lands, etc., to the Royal Hospital of St Katharine, 5 July 1273. Printed from the confirmation of Edward I, 20 Jan. 129 (original now Guildhall Library MS. 9860), by jamison, op. cit., pp. 179-181. See also Monasticon Anglicanum, ed. Caley, Ellis, and Bandinel, vi, 1830, pp. 694-696. ff. 4-5 b;-(2) Ordinances of Queen Philippa for the regulation of the Hospital, 30 No%,. 1351. Printed from the original (now Guildhall Library MS. 9863) by Jamison, op. cit., pp. 182-186. ff. 6-10b;-(3) Confirmation by Queen Elizabeth I of a grant made 3 March 1441 by Henry VI to the Hospital, 1 July 1566.
