NOWELL TRANSCRIPTS. Vol. VIII (ff. iii+ 50). 'The Peregrinatio(n) of Androe Boorde, Doctor in Phisicque, called of many, Doctor perforatus, i.(e). boared.' Transcribed for the most part in the hand of an unidentified copyist, but with some passages in the hand of William Lambarde (ff. 12, 15b, 19b, 30b-31, 32, 36-38), who is probably also the author of a few added pencil notes (ff. 11, 11b, 17, 21 b, 27). The text from which the transcript was made appears to date from between 1545 and 1550, see the references to Henry VIII's new sees, including those of Oxford (transferred from Osney, 9 June 1545) and Westminster (extinguished 29 Mar. 1550) in art. 4 (ff. 12b-13b): as Lambarde states (f. 36b) that Boorde completed the work in 30 Hen. VIII (1538-1539), dedicating it to
Prince Edward, it may represent a later revision or expansion. The text printed by T. Heame in Benedictus Abbas Petroburgensis de Vita et Gestis Henrici II et Ricardi I, Oxford, 1735, pp. 764-804, which was taken from a transcript by Nowell, then also in the hands of Lambarde's descendants (ibid., pp. xlii, 764; cf. Bibl. Topogr. Brit., i, 1780-90, p. 512) is by comparison highly abridged and omits the whole of artt. 1 and 5, together with most of art. 4, including the references to Henry VIII's new sees noticed above. It supplies, however, a passage on 'The high wayes of England' (PP. 797- 799) not found in the present MS. Contents:(1) 'Th(e) nombre of the Shyres of Inglande'. ff. 4-6b;-(2) 'The numbre of cities and market towns'. ff. 6b-10;-(3) 'The numbre of castells & stronge holdes'. ff. 10 1 2;-(4) 'How many p(ar)ishe churches, how many knyghtes fees, Bishopprickes, Bishoppes & Suffrican Bishoppes be in Inglond'. ff. 12-14;-
(5) 'How many notable degrees of honour & worshippe be in Ingland of the Temperaltie'. ff. 14-15;-(6) 'How many faire Ilondes be in Inglond'. f. 15b;-(7) 'of havens and Portes'. ff. 16, 16 b;-(8) 'The numbre of the downs, mountans, hilles, daales, playnes & valees'. ff. 16b- 18b;(9) 'The nombre of the stoone Bridges'. ff. 18b-19b;-(10) 'Of Rivers, Brookes, pooles, and Ponds'. ff. 19b-24b;-(11) 'The numbre of the forestes and parkes'. ff. 24b-30b;-(12) 'Howe manye myles all englande is Rounde about, by the sea side. and howe manye passages and ferryes'. ff. 30b-36;-
(13) 'of Scotland'. f. 36b;-(14) 'Of Ireland'. f. 36b;-(15) 'Of Man'. f. 36b;-(16) (An additional item in Lambarde's hand) 'The names of all the Boroughes in Ingland. 1. et 2. phill. et Mar.', i.e. 25 July 1554- 5 July 1555. ff- 37-38.
