LAYARD PAPERS. Vol. I (ff. 312). "Autobiography from my birth [1817] to my return to England in 1847:" so described in Sir A. H. Layard's hand, f. 1, who states on f. 3 that it was "commenced January 24, 1882." Holograph. Printed in two volumes, with a connecting narrative and extracts from correspondence, in Layard's Autobiography and Letters, ed. the Hon. W. N. Bruce, 1903. The MS. is not reproduced verbatim, and there are passages omitted, including the summaries. For the original MS. of Chs. X-XIX of Layard's Early Adventures, which deals with a part of the same period, viz. 1839-1845, see below (39051). The following table shows the folio of this MS. at which each chapter of the work, as printed, begins : Vol. I : i (f. 3), ii (f . 27 b), iii (f. 60), iv (f. 91b), v (f. 127), vi (f . 149), vii (f. 170), viii (f. 193 b).
