LAYARD PAPERS. Vol. X (ff. 58). Semi-offical letters from A. H. Layard to Sir S. Canning, afterw. (1852) Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe, as British Ambassador at Constantinople, mostly addressed "C. Hansom" or "My dear H." (probably a private resident, through whom it would be safer for the letters to reach Sir. Stratford), during journeys (a) to Macedonia, Thessaly and Serbia, 23 Aug.-20 Sept. 1842. For a letter of Lord Stratford to T. de G. de Fonblanque, British Consul-General at Belgrade, introducing Layard, 15 Aug. 1842, and for the view taken by de Fonblanque of the results of Layard's mission, see H. Sutherland Edwards, op. cit. (38939, art. 5), p. 124. f. 2 ; (b) to report on the rising against Turkish rule in Northern Albania, 9 May-13 June, 1844. f. 39. Autograph drafts and copies (some in pencil), with a heading in Laryard's later hand (f. 1). For an account of the first of these missions see Layard's Journal, 20 Aug.-11 Oct. 1842 (39094), and for both see his Early Adventures, 1887, ii. pp. 377-404, 462-485, and his Autobiography, 1903, ii, pp. 21-33, 124-138, the last two narratives being substantially the same. Quarto.
