LAYARD PAPERS. Vol. XI (ff. 78). Letters from A. H. Layard to H. J. Ross (b. 1820, d. 1900) ; 1847-1857. Type-written copies of the originals (returned by Mrs. Ross to Lady Layard), which are placed according to their date in the General Correspondence. On f. 54 there is a letter to Mr. Ross, senr., father of H. J. Ross, 1858. Ross, who was engaged in commerce in Asiatic Turkey in his early life, assisted Layard in his excavations at Mosul, 1845-1848. He held minor official posts in the Land Transport Corps, etc., in the Crimean War, and was afterwards a partner in the house of Briggs and Co., bankers, in Alexandria, 1857-1869. He married, in 1860, Janet Ann, eldest daughter of Sir A. C. Duff-Gordon, 3rd Bart. Extracts from five of the letters in this volume (1848-1853) are printed in Layard's Autobiography, 1903, ii, pp. 188, 197-202.
