LAYARD PAPERS. Vol. XVIII (ff. 132). Letters from A. H. Layard to his maternal uncle, Benjamin Austen, solicitor (d. 1861), and his aunt by marriage, Mrs. Sara Austen (d. 1888) ; 1852-1868. Type-written copies. Extracts from many of these letters are printed in Layard's Autobiography, 1903, which includes others supplementary to them. For an account of the Austens and their intimacy with Disraeli in his early life see Layard's article in the Quarterly Review, Jan. 1889, the original of which is now. 39049, ff. 93-185 ; for much of the Austen-Disraeli correspondence and a criticism of the above account see Monypenny and Buckle, Life of Disraeli, vol. i, 1910, passim; for a letter of W.
