LAYARD PAPERS Vol. CXXXVIII (ff. 154). Miscellaneous letters, papers, press-cuttings, pamphlets and proclamations relating to the family, career and death of Count Cavour and to the liberation and unification of Italy; 1836-1862 (chiefly 1861). The lower half of f. 102 (dealing with part of Baron Ricasoli's career at Florence) has been cut away. There are no autograph letters of Cavour but there are some of the Marchese d'Azeglio, Minister in London for Sardinia (1850-1861), and for Italy (1861-1867); of Sir James Hudson, G.C.B., British Minister at Turin (1852-1863); and of Sir Anthony Panizzi, K.C.B., Principal Librarian, British Museum (1856-1866). Panizzi's correspondence is now in Add. MSS. 36714-36727 and some of the writers there are identical with writers in this volume. For Layard's relations with Count Cavour and his father, the Marquis Michele, see Autobiogr., etc., 1903, i, pp. 68-70. For mention of Layard's speech in Parliament in defence of Cavour, 1861, see ibid., ii, p. 255, and for an Italian version of his speech on Italy (as Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs), 1862, see this volume, ff. 1-18.
