Title:

Memorandum-book, with fragments of journal (often little more than itineraries) of John Hyde in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia and Persia

Scope & Content:

This volume partly covers, and provides rough material for, the previous volume, and also for a second volume of journal, covering the period 4 Sept. 1819- 2 Nov. 1821, which was lost near Jericho by Sir F. Henniker (cf. his Notes during a visit to Egypt. . ., 2nd ed., 1824, p. 298).

Other note-books formerly in possession of the Purves family but now missing (see list in 42102, f. 2, and cf. f. 256) are:

(a) account of journey to Mt Sinai, 4 Sept.-5 Oct. 1819;
(b) notes of journey from Acre to Aleppo, 8 Jan.-8 Mar. 1821;
(c) notes of journey from Aleppo to Bushire, 11 Apr.-15 June 182I1- (d) notes of various excursions, 5 June-2 Nov. 1823. Paper; ff. iii + 103. Folio.
